Madhurendra Kumar is an Indian sand artist, sculptor, leaf artist, and social awareness campaigner from Bihar. He is internationally known for making huge sand sculptures that bring attention to environmental protection, climate change, world peace , public health, Indian culture and a range of social issues. He basically took the sands of the Aruna River and turned them into an artistic surface and since then he has represented India in plenty of international sand art festivals and competitions.
People often see him as one of India’s leading contemporary sand artists, and he is also recognized for his detailed leaf carving, fruit carving, and for sculptures done from metal, fiber, cement, and plaster of Paris.
Early Life
Madhurendra Kumar was born on 5 September 1994 in Barwakala village (maternal village), Ghorasahan, East Champaran, Bihar, India, into a financially weak farming family. His ancestral village is Bijbani, Bankatwa Block, East Champaran , and it sits along the banks of the Aruna River near the India–Nepal border. Growing up in a rural setting, he faced serious money difficulties, but still pushed through his education and later became an internationally known sand artist.
Education
He finished his primary education in the government school of Bijbani village. In 2009, he cleared the Secondary School Examination from Gandhi High School, Bhelawa Circle, under the Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), Patna, scoring 54.2% marks. He completed his Higher Secondary education (2009–2011) from Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial College, Ghorasahan with 66.2% marks.
Madhurendra earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Hindi from Jawahar Lal Nehru Memorial College, which is affiliated with Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University (BRA Bihar University) at Muzaffarpur, in 2016. Later on he also completed both his Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA in Sculpture) and Master of Fine Arts (MFA in Sculpture) from Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith (MGKV) Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh.
Apart from sculpture, he received formal painting practice through Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, and yes that training helped a lot. He then completed Intermediate Fine Arts (Painting), Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting), and Master of Fine Arts (Painting) with first-class results through affiliated institutions in Motihari, and Patna. He further passed the Intermediate Grade Drawing Examination organized by the Government of Maharashtra, with Grade A.
To add more technical edge, Madhurendra completed an Advanced Diploma in Computer Applications (ADCA) in 2011, and an Amin (Land Surveyor) Training Programme in 2012. After that, he got a Brown Belt certification in Shito Ryu Seiko Kai Karate-Do from the All India Karate-Do Federation, in 2013. In 2026, Madhurendra Kumar was given an Honorary Doctor of Philosophy (Honorary Ph.D.) in Sand Art by America International University (AIU), Hollywood, California, United States, as a recognition for his remarkable global contributions to the sand art field.
Career
Madhurendra began creating sculptures using natural river sand during his childhood. His artistic talent gradually evolved into professional sand art despite the lack of formal resources and training.
His career gained national visibility after former President Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam appreciated and honoured his work in 2012. It felt like a turning point , really, because after that he was more motivated to keep pursuing art professionally.
Over the years, he has created more than 5,000 distinct sand sculptures and over 21,000 leaf artworks, so he’s counted among the most prolific creators in these spaces. The themes he works on are mostly environmental conservation and climate change, also wildlife protection , women’s empowerment, public health , voting awareness, anti-terrorism efforts, historical personalities , and Indian culture in general.
Besides sand sculptures, he’s also recognized for intricate carvings on leaves, fruits, vegetables, and for big permanent pieces made from bronze, brass, aluminum, fiber, cement, and plaster of Paris. Currently, he mostly carries out his artistic work along the banks of the Ganges River, covering Munger, Patna, and Bhagalpur in Bihar.
Awareness Campaigns
Early Social Awareness Campaigns (2004–2011)
Madhurendra Kumar started using art , kind of as a social-awareness instrument, when he was still young. In 2004, he made a special thermocol artwork using discarded cigarette packets, gutkha pouches, alcohol sachets, and other waste items to promote awareness about drug addiction, and to push for a tobacco-free society. The next year, on the International Day Against Drug Abuse, he created another large artwork showing Lord Shiva , to urge people to leave addiction through symbolic expression in art. Throughout his career, Madhurendra Kumar has kept using art, a steady voice, to bring attention to things like environmental conservation, anti tobacco campaigns, anti drug movements, public health, women’s safety, Indian culture and social responsibility. His fresh and inventive way of working with sand clay wax recycled materials leaves fruits vegetables plywood and metal sculptures, has helped him gain recognition as a socially conscious artist, who blends creativity with real public service. Between 2006 and 2011, he kept trying out different art forms such as wax art , thermocol sculptures, plywood paintings, grain art and recycled material installations. The pieces focused on ideas like public health, anti smoking efforts, environmental awareness, social responsibility, and also Indian cultural values. During that span, he even produced several record sized artworks, including one of the world’s largest plywood paintings, plus tiny sculptures made from rice grains and wax.
National and International Participation
Madhurendra Kumar has been involved, on a regular basis, with major cultural festivals run by the Government of Bihar and other Indian institutions. He showcased big scale sand sculptures at Sonpur Mela, Rajgir Mahotsav, Buddha Mahotsav, Vaishali Mahotsav, Kesaria Mahotsav, Thave Mahotsav, Mandar Mahotsav, Mithila Mahotsav, Pawapuri Mahotsav, and also a number of other cultural events. He also represented India at the International Sand Art Festival in Odisha. Additionally, he worked as a Brand Ambassador for several public awareness campaigns carried out by the Election Commission of India, Swachh Survekshan, COMFED Bihar, and Bihar Tourism.
Madhurendra Kumar has represented India in more than 75 international sand art festivals and competitions across over 25 countries, like the United States , United Kingdom , Germany , France , Italy , Russia , Japan , China , Malaysia , Thailand, Singapore , Bhutan , Nepal , Sri Lanka , Denmark, Spain, Australia , Canada , Oman , Belgium , the Netherlands , Cambodia , Myanmar , Vietnam , Bangladesh, New Zealand , Switzerland , and the United Arab Emirates. His international exhibitions helped spotlight Indian art tourism culture and also social awareness on global stages.
Brand ambassadorships
Madhurendra Kumar has served as a brand ambassador for several public awareness campaigns through his large-scale sand sculptures and public art initiatives. During the 2019 Indian general election, he was appointed by the Election Commission of India , to promote voter awareness, and to nudge people toward electoral participation. In 2020, he was appointed again as a Brand Ambassador for the Bihar Legislative Assembly election, and he also represented the Dhaka Assembly constituency in East Champaran, using sand art as a kind of subtle message to spread awareness of democratic participation. During the 2019 general election, he was also appointed as a Brand Ambassador by Dainik Bhaskar for its voter awareness campaign in Bihar. In 2021–2022, he served as a Brand Ambassador for the Government of India’s Swachh Survekshan campaign, creating sand sculptures on the theme "Clean City, Clean Village" to promote sanitation , cleanliness , and environmental responsibility.
Art style and Themes
Madhurendra Kumar is a multidisciplinary Indian artist who is known for making sculptures and other artworks using sand, clay, wax, cement fiberglass, plaster of Paris, metals, plywood, thermocol, grains, leaves, fruits, vegetables, and recycled materials too. A lot of what he does is tied to the philosophy of “Art for Society” , so he blends artistic excellence with social consciousness and environmental care.
His artworks usually lean toward environmental protection, climate change, wildlife conservation, saving water, women empowerment, world peace, anti-terrorism, voter awareness, public health, plus Indian mythology and Buddhist heritage. There’s also a strong presence of patriotism, cultural traditions, and historical personalities. On top of that, he is quite well recognized for his delicate leaf carving, fruit carving, permanent sculptures, portrait work, and the big public installations which he builds from recyclable materials, mainly to support sustainability and social responsibility.

Madhurendra Kumar has received appreciation, honours and awards from several distinguished personalities, constitutional authorities, government institutions and international organisations for his contribution to sand art and public awareness campaigns. Madhurendra Kumar is married. His wife has supported him the whole way, throughout his artistic journey.
